John set up his own company enthuse ltd which specialises in public relations, marketing communications activity, television and events, in January 2003. Previously John was the Communications Marketing Manager for New Zealand’s largest Regional Tourism Organisation, Christchurch & Canterbury Marketing and Telecom NZ's South Island Corporate Events Manager.   

John’s varied background includes media experience on radio, television and in print, acting and entertainment in theatre, shows and at corporate events all the way through to working for some of New Zealand’s largest company’s in communications, events, media and marketing roles.

John saw an opportunity to combine his unique skill set, and as a result his media and events company enthuse, has built up an 11 year award winning track record of adding an enthusiastic creative spark to conferences and events all over NZ with professional improv acting, mc-eeing, speaking, team building and entertainment services, and a list of marketing communications and media clients that have included large sporting events, Association Groups, foundations and some of the country’s leading tourism attractions and corporate brands and products.

A very new father of two, a keen cyclist – John is editor of NZ’s only road cycling magazine, NZ Road Cyclist - he has squeezed in coaching a couple of sports for a living and after travelling and working in lots of places around the world and in New Zealand, is proud to call Christchurch home.

John’s passion is motivating others, whether it’s sporting related or via his work at events, conferences and in the media. He gets a real buzz out of seeing others enjoy and challenge themselves.

  • Successfully secured and managed large sponsorships including;

    • The Montana Winter Festival in 2003 ($250K) that required a combination of Council and corporate funding.
    • Secured several key corporate sponsorships and strategic business relationships for the South Island’s largest road cycle event Le Race.
  • In consultancy roles  john has advised and consulted with various clients concerning their sponsorship activity. This includes tourism activities, recreational events and several large corporate clients.
  • While working for Telecom NZ as the Corporate South Island Events Manager john was involved in sponsorship activity that included the NZ Rugby Union, America’s Cup, The World of Wearable Art and several local christchurch sponsorships such the Showbiz Christchurch and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

superior marketing ability and a feel for successful branding

As Communications Marketing Manager for Christchurch & Canterbury Marketing (CCM - 1999 – Feb 2003) john was responsible for managing the marketing communications, media and public relations for what was a new regional tourism entity at the time.

    • As part of this role he inherited ‘fresh each day’ as the regional brand and managed it as a brand for three years.
    • It was a controversial brand launched and managed on an extremely limited budget.
    • During this time john had to manage the communications process of introducing CCM as a new tourism marketing body to local residents, local canterbury councils (all nine), the City Council, key tourism industry bodies and organisations and CCM's own business partner members.
    • Winning the NZ Tourism ‘People’s Choice’ Award in 2001 – which he was responsible for - which was an indicator of success.
    • A highlight for john personally was winning another more significant NZ Tourism Award for Tourism Marketing & Development in 2002. Again this was a project he managed but reflected the efforts of the entire team and was the end result of three years of hard work.
  • For three years john was responsible for managing the public and media relations for large cycle event Le Race.
    • He was involved in successfully growing the brand for Le Race to now see it well positioned as ‘New Zealand’s slice of the Tour de France’ and a must do South Island and national event.
    • His contract was extended in 2005 include marketing – the results saw a 65% growth in competitors for 2006.  
    • He has now moved onto managing the media relations and pr for Around Brunner, a cycle event held successfully for the first time in 2007 on the West Coast.
  • Part of the planning committee that set up the Banks Peninsula Tourism and Economic Development Board involved developing a strategic plan - which enthuse was contracted to do - employing a Tourism and Economic and Development Officer and attracting quality board members.
    • During john's time as a board member he had the experience of developing a brand identity, working through community and local tourism operator resistance and obtaining their buy in and 2006 the amalgamation of Banks Peninsula into the Christchurch City Council. 
    • john was elected as a board member on the basis of his tourism background and marketing and public relations experience.
  • Various brand work projects:
    • Have included working with Tourism and Economic development agency Venture Southland, The Sales and Marketing Institute of New Zealand, Cookie Time, Holebrook Performance Sports Ltd, Body02 Attitude Training, Banks Peninsula District Council, Massey University Recreation Services and First National Real Estate.

Starting his own business in 2003 john was driven by a passion to make a business out of his creativity. He has a passion for creative industries that includes:

    • Theatre and performing arts - Involvement in conferencing and events as a professional speaker, MC, actor and entertainer. Business tourism is worth well in excess of $40 million per year to the Christchurch economy and theatre and performing arts plays a significant role in contributing to the overall experience.
    • Involvement with television production as a producer, presenter and actor. Joh has been involved with film, short film, documentaries and sports programmes.
    • Involved in fashion industry events – management of and presenter/MC.
    • Journalist – John writes for several magazines that have included Avenues locally in Christchurch and several national magazines including regular articles for Endurance Sport.

John's business experience has seen him working with various differing creative teams that have included;

    • Advertising agencies, both in a tendering/RFP process and as a client; establishing briefs and working with the agency to develop the finished product.
    • Public Relations agencies and individuals – responsible for two winning entries in the New Zealand Tourism Awards that required pulling together a creative team that included an Advertising Agency, PR agency and members of my his own team. He has been a member of the local Public Relations Institute of NZ committee since 2001.
    • Management of the Christchurch Winter Festival in 2003 required working with a diverse group that included engineers, entertainers, City Council resource management team, designers, stall holders and various trusts. 
    • The team at Telecom (where he held the role of South Island Corporate Events Manager) was made up of a variety of creative people and we worked in a highly collaborative environment, utilising the key strengths of each member.
    • Various corporate conferences has meant having to work with a team that includes catering, theming, entertainment, multi media, design and venue representatives.
    • In his consultancy business john is regularly brought in by a client to work alongside other consultants. He enjoys this team approach and the ability to compliment other professionals.
